<p><strong>【移除 Pike 0.6 和 Roxen 1.3】</strong>Turbo Fredriksson <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01540.html">報告</a>了他與
Pike 的維護者 Marek Habersack 討論有關移除 Pike 0.6 的事項。Pike 的 0.6 及 7.0
版本均含有一些問題，亦已給 7.2 及 7.4 版本取代。基於 Roxen 1.3 需要 Pike 0.6，所\
以 Pike 0.6 及 Roxen 1.3 將會在 Testing 及 Unstable 中移除。除此之外，強烈建議

<p><strong>【Debian 自由軟體認可証？】</strong> Jörg Wendland <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal-0304/msg00199.html">想像</a>如果\
存在一個以 <a href="$(HOME)/social_contract#guidelines">Debian 自由軟件綱要\
﹝Debian Free Software Guidelines，DBSG﹞</a>作模範的認可証，這認可証可以反映
DBSG 及 Debian 上自由軟體的基本意義。Henning Makholm <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal-0304/msg00216.html">解釋</a>人們\
可以按這自由認可証來決定某個認可証是否自由。但在構思怎樣才是最好的自由認可証上，\
卻是不能達到共識。</p>

<p><strong>【GNU FDL 的建議聲明】</strong>Anthony Towns 建議了一個關於 <a
href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html">GNU Free Documentation License
(FDL)</a> 的<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal-0304/msg00246.html">\
聲明</a>。經過一段長時間的諮詢，在二零零二年十一月 <a href="http://www.fsf.org/">\
Free Software Foundation </a>出版了版本 1.2 的 GNU FDL。但不幸地，一些 Debian 計\

<p><strong>【Debian-Ham 0.5 釋出囉！】</strong>新的 <a
href="http://debianham.sunsite.dk/">Debian-Ham</a> 最後包含了最新的 tlf (0.8.19)
和 cwdaemon 釋出。Debian-Ham 是一種只要兩張磁片的套件，它的目標是 HAM 的無線使用\
者和具體的設計出 contesting 和日誌管理。目前的系統使用方法是用一張 LILO 的開機片去\
執行最小的 root 磁片。網路的支援加入了連上 DX cluster。</p>

<p><strong>【去除可執行程序文件的擴展名】</strong>基於以前對同一主題的<a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-policy-0304/msg00031.html">討論</a>，\
Joey Hess 提出了一個修改 Debian <a href="$(HOME)/doc/debian-policy/">\
policy</a> 的<a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-policy-0304/msg00047.html">建議</a>，\
要求當命令稿（script）被安裝到系統 <code>PATH</code> 中的目錄時，命令稿的名稱\
中不應含有如 <code>.sh</code> 或 <code>.pl</code> 之類的擴展名。這些表明語言\
的擴展名會在（用其他語言）重寫該可執行程序時造成麻煩，而且也使得命令名更難輸入。\

<p><strong>【Debian 中的 PEAR 套件？】</strong>Piotr Roszatycki <a

Extension and Application Repository</a>（PEAR）中取得套件。PEAR 是可再利用\
的 PHP 元件（reusable PHP components）中的骨架及分類系統。Steve Langasek <a

<p><strong>【翻譯 Debian 小祕訣】</strong>Joel Baker <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01762.html">報告</a>說，\
有個套件 fortunes-debian-hints（此套件包含了如何使用 Debian 的提示）已進入
testing，他希望有人去翻譯這些資料，而不需有本地化的套件。Andreas Tille <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01834.html">說</a>
fortunes-de 的包裝方式是放了 German cookies 在正確的位置。</p>

<p><strong>【Libpng 套件更新】</p>Josselin Mouette <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01880.html">報導</a>了有\
關最近上傳的 libpng 套件所造成的問題。libpng12 套件是 libpng3 的改名，而
libpng10 則是之前的 libpng2。為什麼系統中會同時存有兩個版本的原因，是其它主要
distributions 在 gdk-imlib1 及 Gnome 1 仍與 libpng2 相關連。為了要保持與它們二\
進位碼的相容性，我們的 gdk-imlib1 仍連結到 libpng2。</p>

<p><strong>【Debian 不再支援 i386？】</strong>Jochen Friedrich <a
href="http://bugs.debian.org/185662">注意到</a>由於 GCC 3.2 對於新的
libstdc++ 函式庫要求要 80486（含）以上的 cpu，而舊的 80386 將不再被 Linux 所支援\
了。因此，Matthias Klose <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01895.html">想知道</a>
Debian 是否應該進一步去支援 i386。</p>

<p><strong>【從 USB 隨身碟開機】</strong>Matthias Müller 寫了一份<a
href="http://rz-obrian.rz.uni-karlsruhe.de/knoppix-usb/">文件</a>，描述了如何\
調教 PC 及修改 <a href="http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/">Knoppix</a>，使它能從\
含有<a href="http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixCustomizations">必要\

<p><strong>【包裝另一個開機系統？】</strong>Joachim Breitner <a

該要包裝 <code>simpleinit</code>。Miquel van Smoorenburg 把 <code>sysv-rc</code>
從 <code>sysvinit</code> 中<a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg02025.html">分離</a>出來，使\

<p><strong>【限制軟體】</strong>在一篇訪客<a
href="http://www.linuxandmain.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=332">\
文章</a>中，Brendan Scott 探討了一個常用來表示與自由軟體相反的字彙，叫做專屬軟體\
（proprietary software）。他認為 GPL 宣告的軟體其實也是有著與使用者授權同意條款的軟\
體一樣『專有』，只有授權者擁有該軟體，但是自由軟體則大大地增加了使用者的權利。他提出\
了另一個較合適的詞彙，限制軟體（lock in software）。而另一個詞，hostageware，指的也\
是一樣的事，但並沒有被採用。</p>

<p><strong>【歐洲對抗軟體專利權】</strong>Eurolinux 發起會（initiative）<a
href="http://swpat.ffii.org/briefe/parl034/index.en.hrml">寫道</a>歐洲議會想通過\
一項軟體專利權命令，且在 2003 年五月可能會有一些修正案。身為軟體發展的利益分享者，您\
有機會去參與。您的參與將會具有決定性的影響。<a
href="http://www.fsfeurope.org/project/swpat/swpat">歐洲自由軟體協會</a>需要您的\

<p><strong>【AGNULA 徵求 python 自願者】</strong>歐洲自由軟體基金會正在<a
href="http://mail.fsfeurope.org/pipermail/announce/2003-April/000043.html">\
尋找</a>可以把 GNU/Linux 音訊套件（AGNULA）中非自由軟體的<a
href="http://fsfeurope.org/projects/agnula/java">部分</a>取代掉的自願者。\
AGNULA 是兩套完全由自由軟體組成，基於 Debian GNU/Linux 與 Red Hat Linux，針對\
專業音訊使用者的 GNU/Linux 套件。而這個（非自由）應用程式是 jMax，一個用來建立互\
動式的音樂及多媒體應用程式的視覺化程式設計環境。最有可能的解決方案應該是針對 jMax
建立一個基於 python 的自由軟體圖形介面。</p>

<p><strong>【Trusted Debian 釋出了】</strong>1.0 版的 Trusted Debian 已經\
<a href="http://www.trusteddebian.org/press.html">發佈</a>了。\
這專案於 2002 年十月開始，並於 2003 年三月釋出第一個 beta 版。\
雖然 <a href="http://www.trusteddebian.org/">Trusted Debian</a> 是以 Debian 為基礎，\
但 Trusted Debian 並不是 Debian，與 Debian 計劃亦沒有任何直接關係。\

<p>Welcome to this year's 17th issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter for the
Debian community. Robin Miller published an <a
href="http://newsforge.com/newsforge/03/04/19/2128256.shtml">article</a> on
Newsforge in which he discusses why programmers write Free Software. A similar
<a
href="http://cybernaut.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=8">\
article</a> on Cybernaut covers the same topic but comes to different
conclusions. <a
href="http://slashdot.org/articles/03/04/26/1417247.shtml">Slashdot</a>
readers also digested and discussed both articles.</p>

<p><strong>Removal of Pike 0.6 and Roxen 1.3.</strong> Turbo Fredriksson <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01540.html">reported</a>
that he has discussed removing Pike version 0.6 with Marek Habersack, its
maintainer. Pike versions 0.6 and 7.0 include severe problems and are already
superseded by 7.2 and 7.4. However as Roxen 1.3 requires Pike 0.6, it
alongside Pike 0.6 will be removed from unstable and testing. Users of Roxen
1.3 are strongly encouraged to switch to Caudium, which should work as a drop-in
replacement.</p>

<p><strong>Debian Free Software License?</strong> Jörg Wendland <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal-0304/msg00199.html">wondered</a> if
a license exists that is modelled on the <a
href="$(HOME)/social_contract#guidelines">Debian Free Software Guidelines</a>
(DFSG) and which reflects the DFSG and Debian's sense of Free Software in
general. Henning Makholm <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal-0304/msg00216.html">explained</a>
that people can usually agree about whether a given license is free or not.
But there is nothing like consensus about which of the many ways to construct
a free license is the "best".</p>

<p><strong>Proposed Statement about the GNU FDL.</strong> Anthony Towns
proposed a <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal-0304/msg00246.html">\
statement</a> on the <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html">GNU Free
Documentation License</a> (FDL). In November 2002, after a long period of
consultation, version 1.2 of the GNU FDL was released by the <a
href="http://www.fsf.org/">Free Software Foundation</a>. Unfortunately, some
concerns raised by members of the Debian Project were not addressed, and as
such the GNU FDL can apply to works that do not pass the DFSG.</p>

<p><strong>Installing Debian over a remote GNU/Linux System.</strong> This <a
href="http://trilldev.sourceforge.net/files/remotedeb.html">document</a>
explains the steps required to change the operating system running on a
remote system to Debian. The process uses <code>ssh</code> to connect and
depends upon the availability of the <code>chroot</code> environment whilst
installing. The writer details how he remotely converted a Red Hat system
into a Debian system, although it should be applicable under any GNU/Linux
variant and possibly other similar systems.</p>

<p><strong>Debian-Ham 0.5 released.</strong> A new <a
href="http://debianham.sunsite.dk/">Debian-Ham</a> was finally released with
the latest tlf (0.8.19) and cwdaemon as a keyer. Debian-Ham is a two floppy
distribution that targets HAM radio users and is specifically designed for
contesting and logging. The current scheme uses a LILO boot floppy with a
minix root floppy. Network support is included to connect to a DX cluster.</p>

<p><strong>Eliminating Extensions in Program Filenames.</strong> Following an
earlier <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-policy-0304/msg00031.html">\
discussion</a> on the topic, Joey Hess <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-policy-0304/msg00047.html">proposed</a> a
change in the Debian <a href="$(HOME)/doc/debian-policy/">policy</a> so that
when scripts are installed into a directory in the system <code>PATH</code>,
the script name should not include an extension such as <code>.sh</code> or
<code>.pl</code>. Such language extensions create problems when a program is
reimplemented and make it harder to type command names. They also look
unprofessional and go against the Unix tradition.</p>

<p><strong>PEAR packages in Debian?</strong> Piotr Roszatycki <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01090.html">wondered</a>
which steps need to be taken to get packages from the <a
href="http://pear.php.net/">PHP Extension and Application Repository</a>
(PEAR) included in Debian. PEAR is a framework and distribution system for
reusable PHP components. Steve Langasek <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01106.html">proposed</a> to
use a structure similar to Perl module packaging.</p>

<p><strong>Translating Debian Hints.</strong> Joel Baker <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01762.html">reported</a>
that the package fortunes-debian-hints that contains hints for using Debian
has now entered testing. He was wondering whether there is a way to do
translations of the fortune data, without having to have localized packages.
Andreas Tille <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01834.html">mentioned</a>
the way fortunes-de is packaged which puts the German cookies in the right
place.</p>

<p><strong>Libpng Package Updates.</strong> Josselin Mouette <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01880.html">reported</a>
about some problems caused by recently uploaded libpng packages. The libpng12
packages are a rename of the libpng3 ones, while the libpng10 are the former
libpng2 ones. The reason why there are still 2 versions on the system is that
gdk-imlib1 and GNOME 1 are still linked to libpng2 on other major
distributions. In order to preserve binary compatibility with them, our
gdk-imlib1 is still linked with libpng2.</p>

<p><strong>Debian to drop Support for i386?</strong> Jochen Friedrich <a
href="http://bugs.debian.org/185662">noted</a> that due to GCC 3.2 the new
libstdc++5 library requires an 80486 processor or higher, the old 80386 on
which Linux was started, is no longer supported. Therefore Matthias Klose <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg01895.html">wondered</a> whether
Debian should further support the i386 target.</p>

<p><strong>Booting Debian from a USB Stick.</strong> Matthias Müller set up a
<a href="http://rz-obrian.rz.uni-karlsruhe.de/knoppix-usb/">document</a> in
which he describes how to configure a pc and modify <a
href="http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/">Knoppix</a> to allow booting off of the
USB stick containing a <a
href="http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixCustomizations">\
stripped</a> down GNU/Linux system. You'll have to modify the boot image so
all relevant USB modules get loaded. Additionally the system needs to sleep
for a few seconds, while the modules attempt to recognize the memory stick.</p>

<p><strong>Packing another Init System?</strong> Joachim Breitner <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg02050.html">wondered</a> if
the time has come to package <code>simpleinit</code>. Miquel van Smoorenburg
has <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg02025.html">\
split</a> off <code>sysv-rc</code> from <code>sysvinit</code>, so other
mechanisms can be more easily supported. Ted T'so <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg02121.html">added</a> that
one big problem with Richard Gooch's simpleinit is that it is functionally
very different from the standard System V init scripts that Debian uses.</p>

<p><strong>Rewrite of grep-dctrl.</strong> Antti-Juhani Kaijana <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-0304/msg02128.html">reported</a>
that he is in the process of rewriting grep-dctrl. The <a
href="https://alioth.debian.org/projects/dctrl-tools">rewrite</a> attempts to
gain speed over the old version whilst removing one of the greatest defects in
the old code. The new grep-dctrl will be able to combine searches in a full
boolean manner. He is seeking testers for the new code and has supplied a CVS
location.</p>

<p><strong>Lock-In Software.</strong> In a guest <a
href="http://www.linuxandmain.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=332">\
article</a> Brendan Scott discussed the term "proprietary software" which is
often used as the opposite of Free Software. In his opinion, GPLed software
is as "proprietary" as software under an end user license agreement. Only the
licensor owns the software. However, Free Sofware grants the user much more
rights. He proposed an alternative, more appropriate, term "lock-in
software". Other terms, including hostageware, are identified, but not
adopted.</p>

<p><strong>Against Software Patents in Europe.</strong> The Eurolinux
initiative has <a href="http://swpat.ffii.org/briefe/parl034/index.en.html">\
said</a> that the European Parliament is likely to ratify a Software Patent
Directive ("Directive on the Patentability of Computer-Implemented
Inventions"), possibly with helpful amendments in May 2003. As a stakeholder
in software development, you have the opportunity to participate. As
participation can have a decisive influence, together with the <a
href="http://www.fsfeurope.org/projects/swpat/swpat">FSF Europe</a> they ask
for your participation.</p>

<p><strong>Python Volunteers for AGNULA wanted.</strong> The FSF Europe is <a
href="http://mail.fsfeurope.org/pipermail/announce/2003-April/000043.html">\
looking</a> for volunteers to replace a non-free <a
href="http://fsfeurope.org/projects/agnula/java">component</a> of A GNU/Linux
Audio Distribution (AGNULA). AGNULA is two entirely Free Software GNU/Linux
distributions for professional audio users based upon Debian GNU/Linux and
Red Hat Linux. The application in question is jMax, a visual programming
environment for building interactive musical and multimedia applications.
The most likely solution to this problem seems to be the creation of a
Python-based Free Software GUI for jMax.</p>

<p><strong>Trusted Debian released.</strong> Version 1.0 of Trusted Debian has
been <a href="http://www.trusteddebian.org/press.html">announced</a>. The
project was started in October 2002 with a beta release in March 2003. <a
href="http://www.trusteddebian.org/">Trusted Debian</a> is based on Debian but
is not Debian and does not have any direct relation to the Debian project.
The <a href="http://www.trusteddebian.org/motivation.html">aim</a> of the
project is to provide a highly secure but usable GNU/Linux platform.</p>
