<p>在一篇對 Miguel de Icaza 所作的<a href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=6989">專訪</a>中，Miguel <a href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=6989&page=2">認為</a> Debian 社群公約是讓人憧憬的，但是對於軟體銷售商而言 Debian 卻是一個難以從事產品支援的平台。Philip Charles 同時 <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-hurd/2004/05/msg00034.html">公佈了</a>新版的 K6 mini <a href="http://na.hurd.gnuab.org/pub/debian-cd/K6/">ISO</a> <a href="http://eu.hurd.gnuab.org/pub/debian-cd/K6/">映像檔</a>。</p>

<p><strong>【兩位 Debian 開發者不幸罹難】</strong>
Debian 為逝去的兩位開發成員致上哀悼。在參加於西班牙 Valencia 所舉辦的<a href="http://www.lliurex.net/congres/cas/">自由軟體討論會</a>之後，兩位 Debian 開發者 Manuel Estrada Sainz (ranty) 與 Andre's Garci'a (ErConde) 不幸於回程中喪命於一場車禍意外。對於這兩位開發者在自由軟體及 Debian 上所表現的傑出成果以及偉大的貢獻，Debian 專案將永誌難忘並向他們致上最高的敬意，其他的開發者也將繼續堅守崗位持續奉獻於開發工作。</p>

<p><strong>【讓 Java 相關軟體進入 Debian Main 系統的進展情形】</strong>(本消息由 Arnaud Vandyck 報導)
一些在 Debian 上的 Java 相關軟體由於需要昇陽 JVM ( non-free software ) 的輔助才能執行，導致這些軟體在Debian 上被歸類至 contrib 系統。因此一些開發者正努力讓這些軟體能夠在不借助 non-free software 的狀況下也能有效執行，以便讓其能進入 Debian main 系統。目前的成果已順利的讓一些軟體移到 Main 當中，此外像<a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/classpath.html">GNU Classpath</a>、<a href="http://www.sablevm.org">SableVM</a>、和 <a href="http://www.kaffe.org">Kaffe</a> 等 free 的JVM 軟體也在持續的更新進步當中。當前較重要的兩個主題是：

<li>以 <a href="http://packages.debian.org/gjdoc">gjdoc</a> 取代 javadoc
<li>完全以 free software 來編譯 <a href="http://packages.debian.org/ant">ant</a>

<p><strong>【Binoculars 網站以 Debian 架設】</strong>(本消息由 Jon Thralow 報導)
世界最大的雙筒望遠鏡精品購物網站 <a href="http://www.binoculars.com">Binoculars</a> 以 Debian 架設。這個網站採用了一種所謂"網頁動態產出(dynamically generated HTML)"的技術，以每隔5分鐘的頻率對網頁進行再產出(regenerate)然後送至網頁伺服器。這個技術看起來其實與 Debian 官方網站所採用的技術差不多，只是再產出的頻率較高而已。</p>

<p><strong>【Gnome 2.6 納入 unstable 系統的情形】</strong>
Sebastien Bache 發了<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/05/msg00064.html">一封信</a>至 Debian 通信論壇報告關於 Gnome 2.6 在 Debian 中的進展。這封信件的主旨在於希望根據過去幾周來相關套件的<a href="http://pkg-gnome.alioth.debian.org/package-status.html">完成進度</a>，徵詢發佈團隊(release team)如何讓Gnome 2.6 由體驗版(experimental)移至 unstable 版本。這些套件已經由許多的使用者<a href="http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?GnomeTwoDotSixFAQ">測試過</a>，目前已無任何重大的問題回報。稍後，Anthony Towns 則<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2004/05/msg00071.html">回應</a>，其實有其他許多不同平台的套件(例如：alpha, hppa, sparc, mipsel, s390 and m68k...)在體驗版中都還不齊全，應該等到這些平台的套件在體驗版中都完全準備好之後，才能讓 Gnome 從體驗版移至 unstable 版本。</p>

<p><strong>【昇陽是否應該使用 Debian GNU/Linux】</strong>
David Edmondson <a href="http://www.dme.org/log/2004/05/14/linux-debian-bad-news">認為</a>昇陽應該使用 Debian 作為其在開發 Linux 等相關工作的基礎。而Debian 最主要的利基點在於對應用程式而言，一切都以 apt-get 來進行掌控。Glynn Foster <a href="http://www.gnome.org/~gman/blog//15052004">認同</a>這個說法，但是卻點出就大部份的情況而言，Debian 只是"足堪使用(just Works)"。

*譯者註：David Edmondson 與 Glynn Foster 皆於昇陽任職，Glynn的論點主要源自於他未能在 Debian 上安裝 <a href="http://wwws.sun.com/software/javadesktopsystem/">JDS(Java Desktop System)</a>，但是在 Suse 上卻能順利安裝。</p>


<p><strong>【套件維護者是否應該讓其套件支援多種功能】</strong>
Eric Dorland <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/05/msg00811.html">問到</a>，由於套件在編譯時期均可藉由 Configure 設定額外功能的支援，那麼如果使用者期待套件在編譯時期加入某種功能，Debian 該如何處理使用者的這些要求(請參照<a href="http://bugs.debian.org/222421">臭蟲 #222421</a>與<a href="http://bugs.debian.org/231472">臭蟲 #231472</a>)。他自己認為應該在編譯時期直接開啟額外功能的支援或者另外獨立編譯一個支援額外功能的套件與原有的套件區隔開來，但是如此一來套件維護者將會遭遇到功能浸蝕(feature-creep)的問題並且必須去維護比原來更多的套件。Matthew Palmer <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/05/msg00813.html">提出</a>三種選擇：另外編譯一個新的獨立套件、把額外功能直接加入既有套件或是設法讓使用者自己在重新編譯套件時可以輕易的把額外的功能編入。

*譯者註：所謂的功能浸蝕(feature-creep)是指程式隨著發展會漸漸增加其功能，但是如果這些功能是經由 patch 一個一個漸漸增加而非計畫性的，反而會導致程式的複雜度及臭蟲。

<p><strong>【移除套件時應否一併將安裝時所建立的系統帳號移除】</strong>
Stephen Gran <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/05/msg01151.html">問到</a>如果某個套件在安裝時建立了系統帳號，那麼在移除套件時是否應該自動的將此帳號一併移除。Wouter Verhelst <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/05/msg01156.html">提出說明</a>並認為由於某些檔案，例如紀錄檔(logfile)以及資料庫檔案(database file)可能仍由這些帳號所擁有，因此交由使用者自行決定是否移除可能是個較好的辦法。</p>

<p><strong>【姓名權 (Right of Publicity)】</strong>
在軟體許可證中，經常出現一些不許以著作權所有人之姓名作為廣告或宣傳的附帶條款(no-advertising clauses)。Branden Robinson 對此感到厭煩並做出<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00540.html">說明</a>。在美國，對於姓名權或類似的人格權遭受他人濫用作為廣告或行銷手法的情形已經有相關的<a href="http://www.law.cornell.edu/topics/publicity.html">立法補償</a>了。為了避免讓人誤解著作權也涵蓋了姓名權或類似的權利，在軟體許可證中應該避免類似條款的誤用。 Branden 希望能得到其他國家關於處理這種案例的相關資訊以宣導避免這種條款的使用。</p>

<p><strong>【IBM 公眾許可權 (IBM Public License)】</strong>
Frank Lichtenheld 再度<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00597.html">嚴詞砲轟</a> <a href="http://www-124.ibm.com/developerworks/oss/license10.html">IBM 公眾許可權</a>並質疑它是否適合 Debian。<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00600.html">MJ Ray</a> 與 <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00603.html">Walter Landry</a> 也展開關心。但是就像 Steven Augart 所<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00617.html">指出</a>的，這項許可證已經被用於 <a href="http://packages.debian.org/postfix">postfix</a> 了。</p>

<p><strong>【Sendmail 開放原始碼許可權 (Sendmail Open Source License)】</strong>
Richard Nelson <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00598.html">表示</a> <a href="http://packages.debian.org/sendmail">sendmail</a> 新的許可證正交付討論並在尋求回應。特別是他們想知道這個新的許可證是否能像 sendmail 8 的許可證一樣為大眾所接受。<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00636.html">Henning Makholm</a> 和 <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/05/msg00742.html">Nathanael Nerode</a>認為如果任何人必須被迫到舊金山去證明其清白的話，那麼這個許可證很顯然的就是不自由的。

<p><strong>【關注新版的GPL】</strong>
Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho 相當<a href="http://www.kaijanaho.info/antti-juhani/blog/en/debian/gpl-dfsg.html">關心</a><a href="http://www.fsf.org/">自由軟體基金會</a>對於下一版 <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html">GNU 通用公共授權</a>的發展情形。謠傳關於新版 GPL 有一個可能的改變就是 - 如果一個網站使用了 GPL 軟體，那麼此一網站應當公佈(post)該軟體的原始碼。這個情形將會使 <a href="http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines">Debian 自由軟體引言(Debian Free Software Guidelines)</a>與之相牴觸並使得 DFSG 失效。他同時也質疑 GNU 的<a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html">自由文件許可證</a>是否也是深化 Debian 與自由軟體基金會之間不同論調的主要癥結點。
