【增加活動的能見度】 通信論壇上有一封信[1]號召大家更積極地參與及準備 Debian 參加的相關活動。Debian 計劃的網站上有數個網頁[2]報導 Debian 參與的活動。這些網頁通常有一個小段落簡短地介紹這個活動，以及一個較長的段落報導 Debian 參與這個活動的情形。不過其中只有極少數的網頁有[3]活動後的總結[4]報告[5]。希望將來的活動能在網站上有更多的報導。另外，Peter Karlsson 製作[6]了 2003 年中所有活動[7]的 ICS 檔案（Internet Calendar entries）。Infodrom 上則有一份今年 GNU/Linux 重要活動的列表[8]。

【Debian 新套件的 RSS Feed】 Joe Nahmias 告訴我們 Andrew Cosgriff 依據 Randolph Chung 的最近七天新套件列表[9]製作了一份 Debian 新套件的 RSS Feed[10]。附帶一提，這份列表也是 DWN 中【新的或值得注意的軟體套件】列表的來源。

【新的 Debian 名片】 Jean-Michel Kelbert 通知[11]大家新的名片[12][13]已經設計好了。Martin Wuertele 則提供[14]了舊款[15]名片的更新版本。這些新款名片都在稍後被納入 Debian 名片[16]中。

【須要 Python 的 Perl 套件】 Kenneth Pronovici 負責維護[17]一個 Debian perl 函式庫套件[18]。這聽起來也許有點奇怪，不過這個函式庫的作者最近新增了一個元件，這個元件是用 Python 而非 Perl 寫的。Wouter Verhelst 和 Matt Zimmerman 建議他將這個函式庫分割成數個套件，保持原來的 Perl 函式庫套件，把新的 Python 元件獨立成另一個套件。

【Debian Conference 3】 Tollef Fog Heen 宣佈[19]將在歐洲（更精確地說，是在挪威的 Oslo）舉辦 Debian 研討會[20]。Oslo 大學非常好心地提供我們場地。會議室和網路在研討會開始之前幾天[21]就會準備好，所以大家可以有時間坐下來、相互討論交流、烤肉、野餐，好好地輕鬆一下。如果你有興趣[22]在 Debconf[23] 中演講或是希望聽到什麼主題，請您告訴 Tollef[24]。

【Egrep 從 /bin 移到 /usr/bin】 Jan Niehusmann 懷疑[25]最近將 egrep 從 <code>/bin</code> 移到 <code>/usr/bin</code> 的作法是否合適。這會造成如 logcheck 一類將 egrep 路徑寫死在程式中（hard-coded）的套件出問題。Hwei Sheng Teoh 不知道[26]應該對這一類的套件登錄 bug 或是再把 egrep 移回原來的路徑下。Matt Zimmerman 傾向[27]前者，而 Adam Heath 則是贊成[28]後者。Stephen Frost 認為[29]較合適的解決方式是讓 egrep、fgrep 和 grep 變成同一個執行檔。這樣不但能解決上述狀況，而且如果有任何程式
在掛載（mount）<code>/usr</code>之前要使用到 egrep 或 fgrep 也不會有問題。

【從 Aspell 字典中移除 DEC 字庫】 Kevin Atkinson 宣佈[32]因為對 DEC 字庫（DEC Word List）的授權方式有疑問，而且少了它並不會嚴重影響套件的品質，所以現在已經將它從 aspell 英文字典中移除。對字庫授權方式的疑問在去年有相關的討論[33]。

【Debian 的保障穩私權宣告？】 Rapha螔 Hertzog 詢問[34] Debian 是不是應該要在網站中加上保障穩私權宣告（privacy notice）。現在網站上並沒有任何聲明能讓使用者確知如訂閱通信論壇的使用者資料庫會被妥善保密，不會被賣給相關業者等等的穩私權問題。Santiago Vila 認為[35]這是個不錯的主意，不過現階段的較急迫的工作應該是加強防堵通信論壇的垃圾信件。

【POSIX 模式下的 su】 Greg Stark 發現[36]如果將 POSIXLY_CORRECT 設為 1 會造成部份程式和安裝命令稿（installation scripts）無法執行，因為它們沒有考慮到 GNU 程式在 POSIX 模式下執行時會有不同的特性。這個問題大部份是因為在 init 命令稿中該使用 start-stop-daemon 的地方卻用 su 才造成[37]的。

【變更選單檔案的位置】 Bill Allombert 說[38]因為歷史因素，現有的選單系統把選單檔案（menu files）放在 /usr/lib/menu 中。但是，如果要符合 FHS[39]（File Hierarchy Standard），我們得把這些檔案移到 /usr/share/menu 下面。他建議上傳一個新的選單套件把檔案同時放在這兩個地方。Richard Braakman 認為[40]因為這些選單檔案都很小，所以可以暫時把同一份檔案複製到這兩個目錄下來達成 FHS 的要求。

【Changelog 使用 UTF-8 編碼】 Colin Walters 提議[41]在規章中增列條文規定 changelog 檔要以 Unicode[42] 的 UTF-8[43] 編碼。現在的情況是，人們把各式各樣的字元填入 Debian changelog。Radovan Garabik 說[44]這樣的提議至少已經被提出過兩次，而且早已經達成決議了。

【使用者設定檔】 Jamin Collins 建議[45]將使用者設定檔移到 ~/.etc 下，這樣大家的主目錄（home directory）看起來比較不會這麼亂。FHS 通信論壇上也在討論[46]這個問題。Colin Watson 說[47]這個方式和我們大部份套件的作法不同，而且使用者如果自己編譯這些軟體，它們還是會把設定檔放在主目錄下。Lars Wirzenius 則說除非能用[48]時光機回到 1970 年代，不然現在想做這樣的修改已經太晚了。

【LyX 被移到 main 中】LyX[49]，一個在 X 視窗中執行的 LaTeX 所見即所得前端程式（WYSIWYG-frontend），終於被上傳[50]到 main 套件檔案庫了。因為它使用的 Xforms[51] GUI toolkit 改採[52] GNU Lesser General Public License[53]，才讓 LyX 得以進入 main 檔案庫。Xforms 的 1.0-final 在十二月中旬時發行並上傳[54]至 main 檔案庫中。

【將 C++ 轉換到 GCC 3.2 的準備工作完成了】 Ryan Murray 表示[55] 針對 GCC 3.2 的 C++ 轉換計畫[56]準備工作已經完成。因為 GCC 3.2 變更了 C++ ABI，由 GCC 3.2 編輯的 C++ 函式庫無法和舊版 GCC 編譯出來的 C++ 應用程式搭配使用，反之亦然。除了 libqt2 之外，我們將以 gcc-3.2 ABI 重新編譯所有的 C++ 套件。讓 libqt2 保持原有的 ABI 是為了維持它和 woody 及其它使用 libqt2 程式的相容性。libqt3 將使用新的 ABI。
