Protest against software patents

Due to the directive validating Software Patents that will be voted on at the European Parliament on September 1st, we have decided to protest.

Citizens whose nations are part of the European Parliament -- please support the real demonstration that will take place in Brussels this Wednesday 27th of August.

One can also sign the Petition for a Software Patent Free Europe.

Software patents are threat to open-source software.

Companies can and will use software patents in an unpleasant way, because they have money to pay lawyers while open-source software developers don't. Small companies with a tight budget are also likely to suffer.

The use of software patents to protect the investments that a company made in their software is very small. The misuse will be very big, also because patents can be very vague. There is a big difference with patents on inventions of other nature, such as mechanical, because software can be protected by copyright. And a software invention usually doesn't require big investments. You can think of ten items to patent in an hour (believe me, I have done it). Applying for a patent is just a matter of paying a patent attorney.

The European Governement is going to vote on Software Patents on September first. August 27th there will be a big protest action in Brussels.

剛剛才注意到這一則消息，德國的FFII組織號召了一向反對歐盟的軟體專利權的計畫，號召在827這一天（也就是今天）進行線上的示威抗議，計畫內容在此：Online Demonstration Against Software Patents。

大意是說，在歐盟目前所草擬的軟體專利權中，你發展任何一套軟體，如果當中使用了其他公司所想到的觀念或創意（英文中用的是Idea），就可能會吃上官司。在目前歐洲所制訂的專利權法中，「舉凡數學演算法，心理活動的認知圖示與規則，用來做生意的方法以及電腦軟體，不得為專利權標的」（mathematical methods, schemes and rules for mental activity, methods of doing business and programs for computers are not patentable inventions），而現在歐洲所要制訂的新專利權法則是要將這些概念全都納入保護。

我是從瀏覽發展b2這套國外相當普及的weblog的公司—Cafelog上看到這則消息，該公司也參與了這項抗議行動，在今天將網頁關閉一天。網頁上面說，如果weblog的觀念被保護的話，那麼也就不會有b2了，在歐洲任何人要發展weblog，都必須要獲得授權。

對方不釋出source code自己想的也不行，那未來外觀類似的不就也會吃上官司摟...
